Requirements
- Age: Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
- Health Insurance: Must have valid health insurance coverage in Spain for a minimum of 1 year covering the applicant and all of the dependents (co-pay or deductible-based insurance will not be accepted).
- Background Check: Clean criminal record and pass a security background check.
- Proof of Passive Income: Demonstrate a stable income to support themselves and any dependents.
- Proof of Accommodation (required by some Spanish Consulates): can be proven with existing property in Spain, long-term rental of 3-12 months, a letter from a host, or hotel/temporary stay booking
Types of Residency
- Applicants must provide proof of passive income (dividends, coupons, interest, pension, social security, and rental income) of 400% of IPREM for the main applicant and 100% of IPREM for qualified dependents
- Main applicant: EUR 28,800 per year (as of 2025)
- Qualified dependents: EUR 7,200 per year (as of 2025)
Process
- Provide proof of passive annual income equal to a minimum of 400% of Spain’s Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples (IPREM), and 100% of IPREM per qualified dependent
- Document Preparation: Gather all necessary documents, including passport copies, proof of investment, health insurance, and a clean criminal record certificate.
- Application Submission: Submit the application to the relevant Spanish consulate in your country of residence
- Visa Approval: The Non-Lucrative Visa is approved and issued for an initial 90 days.
- Enter Spain on the acquired visa and apply for a residence permit (TIE card) within 1 month of arrival.
- 90 days after the initial visa expiration, apply for renewal, which is granted for 1 year. The second renewal is granted for 2 years, and 2 years thereafter.
